The CanadaGAP Program joins the food safety community worldwide to celebrate the 7th annual World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2025. The day is formally recognized by organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and Codex.

As a food safety program designed to help implement and maintain effective food safety procedures within fresh produce operations, CanadaGAP is pleased to promote and support recognition of World Food Safety Day. This annual event is an opportunity for companies around the world to drive food safety awareness.

This year’s theme is “Food safety: science in action”. The CanadaGAP Program is built on a foundation which echoes that theme: our food safety standard is practical, comprehensive and based on published, peer-reviewed science. Additionally, the CanadaGAP Technical Advisory Committee is made up of members with food safety knowledge, education and technical expertise, who review all proposed revisions and updates to the CanadaGAP materials through a scientific lens.

Founded on the principle that “Food safety is everyone’s business”, World Food Safety Day presents five calls to action:

  1. Ensure it’s safe – Governments must ensure safe and nutritious food for all
  2. Grow it safe – Agriculture and food producers need to adopt good practices
  3. Keep it safe – Business operators must make sure food is safe
  4. Know what’s safe – Consumers need to learn about safe and healthy food
  5. Team up for food safety – Let’s work together for safe food and good health!

In conjunction with World Food Safety Day, the Canadian food industry, as represented by the Canadian Supply Chain Food Safety Coalition, is also declaring June 7, 2025 as the 1st Food Safety Education Day in Canada. As a Coalition member, CanadaGAP joins the national industry in recognizing the importance of food safety education. The CanadaGAP Program includes ongoing education opportunities for employees, auditors, producers and other stakeholders. By encouraging learning and maintaining a strong focus on continuous improvement, the program supports understanding of current food safety practices and requirements. Through its commitment to knowledge sharing and standardization, CanadaGAP strengthens food safety across the horticulture sector, reduces risk for program participants and builds trust with consumers and buyers of Canadian produce.

We encourage CanadaGAP-certified companies to take the opportunity on June 7 to showcase your efforts and to recognize all those within your company who contribute daily to a safe food supply.
